Our main interest will be in bird spotting and recording which birds you see, as these are a good way of monitoring the environment and changes in habitats . One morning, sitting in Khadigram ashram, on the other side of the Lakhiserai Hills, I was watching some parakeets eating the fruits of a neem tree, and I understood how much they were a part of their environment, while we, by building dams and bunding fields, were trying to change it. For good reason of course, we were trying to increase agricultural production with small farmers, but perhaps we could do that with more understanding of the environment.
